Making a starter is SO easy it’s almost hard to believe it is 2 ingredients. The beauty of sourdough is that you get a gorgeous, delicious loaf of bread from strictly flour, water, and salt. Sourdough starter is just that… flour & water that has fermented.
You’ll find that waiting is the hardest part of making a sourdough starter.
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you make your starter from scratch:
• Use a high-quality organic bread flour if you can. Make sure it is unbleached.
• Feed with room temperature to warm water in the colder months or if your house is cooler.
• The temperature of your home matters. (The time it takes to become active will depend on how warm or cold your house is.)
• If you feel your starter needs an extra boost, feed it with whole wheat flour at one of your feedings.
Give your starter TIME. It has taken me anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks to make a successful starter at home. Just stay consistent and be patient.
